AM I, I AM

EXPERIMENTAL
PRINT (24” x 24” POSTER)
EMBROIDERY THREAD / ILLUSTRATOR / PHOTOSHOP

Inspiration can be found in many ways and is sometimes unexpected. This poster was created using an unconventional process for inspiration; it began by taking pictures of subjects that were personally appealing and explored the connections and similarities between otherwise unrelated pictures. I was inspired to pursue the topic of identity confusion after finding inspiration from a specific image of large boulders where sunlight was filtering through as intricate fragments to reveal and shadow the various surfaces of the rocks. After reflection and journaling, I had the idea of similarly fragmenting the various pictures using squares, similar to an 8-bit screen. My immediate connection to the squares were my childhood memories of watching VHS tapes and playing video games on the Nintendo with my brother. The elements created a dichotomy between the images of nature and my childhood memories of video games and technology–connecting my past self to my present self. The contrasting colors, green and purple, as well as black and white show opposition and signify two separate perspectives. The blocks of phrases and words are combinations of dissected questions and statements from when I journalled. They fit into the maze-like, blank spaces and areas between the colored squares. The contrasting threads connect the phrases, switch colors, and disappear as they travel through the blank areas to visually explain how thoughts and impressions are transferred through conversation.
