DESIGN STREAK

ILLUSTRATOR / PROCREATE

Design Streak is ISU’s student-run design studio, where the professor takes the role as creative director. Each semester, members individually create a variant logo to represent the studio for that semester. The studio votes to pick the best variation, and it is used in place of the original logo on projects made that semester. The original logo is the outer silhouette of a capital “D”, in the Mrs. Eave’s typeface, that has been sectioned diagonally into 3 even shapes. The three shapes represent those involved in Design Streak: the teacher, student, and client.

These variations were created for two separate semesters. The first variation is inspired by the idea of a flowing aura because, while there are three separate entities, their thoughts and ideas do not stay within a specific boundary. Through discussions, critiques, and presentations, thoughts and ideas are constantly building off of each other and inspiring each other. The dynamic lines move across all three shapes to connect them but vary in thickness to create the impression of separation that the original logo has. Each line has purpose in creating and maintaining the shape and structure of the original while adding decoration and personality. The experimental and surprising color combinations play off the creativity and uniqueness of the studio as students work together to bring their individual ideas as an ingredient in the recipe they create together.

The second alternate logo seeks to demonstrate the ecstatic power and energy that is created when the three entities come together. Where the first variation represents the potential energy, the second shows the reaction. The accumulation of thoughts, dialogues, and emotions create a wonderful reaction and metaphorical explosion of design and creativity. The studio is an uncommon chance for students to hone their abilities and explore the range of creativity that graphic design can be. The saturated colors and dramatic movement embody awe and child-like wonder–design is not boring!
