Design Streak is ISU’s student-run design studio, where Professor Archana Shekara takes the lead as creative director. In collaboration with Heartland Community College, ISU’s Office of International Engagement organized and hosted an Indian Cultural Festival for their 2024 week-long cultural event taking place on both campuses. The event includes lectures, demonstrations, arts, food, and more. This year, the colleges welcomed Dr. Deppshikha Sharma from Manipal University in Jairpur and Dr. Priti Samyukta from JNAFA University in Hyderabad. While there were many topics to find inspiration from, this poster design intentionally seeks to honor the featured lecturers’ craftsmanship as textile artists as well as India–an enthusiastic and vibrant culture.
The flowing and dynamic lines in this poster are inspired by Indian calligraphy, and their thread-like and continuous movement are symbolism of the textiles and “Threads of India” that make their way throughout the world. The decorative flora that create frame and structure for the typography have deep significance in Indian culture: the lotus is a symbol for beauty, growth, and strength; and mangoes, which are the national fruit as well as a common textile pattern that has made its way around the world, represents love, vibrant life, and happiness. These two motifs express the values of academic life as well as the welcoming and warm spirit that the festival spreads. The background is a pattern inspired by “jali”, a unique innovation in Indian architecture where patterned screens are used to allow light in without exposing those inside to the outdoor elements. The pattern serves as an open and welcoming invitation into the life and customs of India that would otherwise be contained within the personal lives of Indian culture. The warm and vibrant colors embody the bold smells and flavors of India.
